the 1st annual MARZON-YEAH! awards - part 1

WELCOME ONE AND ALL TO ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS AWARD SHOWS IN ALL OF MY HOUSE. This is a chance for me to share the best and worst of all the movies I saw (strictly) in theaters or whatever other categories I want to throw in. Today, we look at the categories of:

BEST MOVIE

BEST LEAD PERFORMANCES

BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCES

BEST SCREENPLAY

BEST SCORE & SONG

MOST DISAPPOINTING MOVIE

Without further ado, here are my picks:

BEST MOVIE

ARRIVAL

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

DOCTOR STRANGE

LA LA LAND

MOONLIGHT

THE NICE GUYS

For BEST MOVIE, it's pretty self explanatory: it's whatever I had the best time with in the theater, or what I found the most insightful or fulfilling or beautiful. It's not a surprise that the big winner for me is LA LA LAND. I loved this movie so much, and you can read why here. The other five come in close, but LA LA LAND was the one I related to the most and where I found so much to love.

BEST LEAD PERFORMANCES

ARRIVAL - Amy Adams

DEADPOOL - Ryan Reynolds

EDGE OF SEVENTEEN - Hailee Steinfeld

ELLE - Isabelle Huppert

FENCES - Denzel Washington

HIDDEN FIGURES - Taraji P. Henson

JACKIE - Natalie Portman

LA LA LAND - Emma Stone

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA - Casey Affleck

THE NICE GUYS - Ryan Gosling

SILENCE - Andrew Garfield

20TH CENTURY WOMEN - Annette Bening

Not gonna give a solid winner here, but these were the actors who done right by me in their films. Amy Adams was so emotionally affecting; Ryan Reynolds was hilarious, but also gave Deadpool/Wade Wilson a lot of heart; Hailee Steinfeld felt so natural and relatable; Isabelle Huppert carried that movie on her strength as a woman; I can listen to Denzel Washington talk August Wilson's dialogue for days; Taraji P. Henson showed great strength and courage; Natalie Portman accurately portrayed Jackie Kennedy with such grace and respect; Emma Stone is so good, especially when she goes subtle, but really excels at letting the audience know what she's thinking just through her facial expressions; Casey Affleck thrives on the subtlety of his performance; Ryan Gosling is so much better in THE NICE GUYS than in LA LA LAND, when he's free to go completely off-the-rails, comedy-wise, while also giving his character more layers; Andrew Garfield has much more to play around with in SILENCE than in HACKSAW RIDGE; Annette Bening is so warm and caring as a mother I'm sure everyone wanted or had as a kid.

my vote to win the oscar: emma stone & ryan gosling (the nice guys)

Probably Going to Win the Oscar: Emma stone & casey affleck

BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCES

ALLIED - Marion Cotillard

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR - Chadwick Boseman

DOCTOR STRANGE - Tilda Swinton

FENCES - Viola Davis

HELL OR HIGH WATER - Jeff Bridges

LION - Dev Patel

MOONLIGHT - Mahershala Ali

THE NICE GUYS - Angourie Rice

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - Michael Shannon

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - Aaron Taylor-Johnson

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE - John Goodman

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE - Michael Fassbender

Most of these performances did affect me in the best of ways: Marion Cotillard is so enchanting and heartbreaking; Chadwick Boseman gives it his all and is so badass in his brilliant subplot; Tilda Swinton plays wise and badass so well, too; Viola Davis bares her soul and goes all out; Jeff Bridges was born to play this old Sheriff role; Dev Patel is no longer Mr. Slumdog and has grown as an actor so well, especially in LION; Mahershala Ali is so natural, and that table scene will stick with me forever; Angourie Rice exudes charm and has great comedic timing for a young actress; similar to Jeff Bridges, Michael Shannon excels as another older Sheriff-type and gets to chew some scenery to great effect; Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes chewing scenery to a whole new level, and is spellbindingly creepy at the same time; John Goodman takes spellbindingly creepy to a whole new level; Michael Fassbender was the only good part of the damn movie (minus the whole hanging out in a globe of rubble...).

my vote to win the oscar: viola davis & Michael shannon

probably going to win the oscar: viola davis & Mahershala ali

BEST SCREENPLAY

DEADPOOL

HELL OR HIGH WATER

MOONLIGHT

THE NICE GUYS

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS

20TH CENTURY WOMEN

my vote to win the oscar: deadpool

probably going to win the oscar: moonlight (& la la land)

BEST SCORE

DOCTOR STRANGE

I love this score mainly because of my love for the movie, and the fact that it's probably the first memorable theme for an Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character.

BEST SONG

LA LA LAND - “A Lovely Night”

Hands down, the best song of the whole movie. This is the most plot-relevant and Broadway-like the musical gets.

MOST DISAPPOINTING MOVIE

ASSASSIN’S CREED

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS

A MONSTER CALLS

SUICIDE SQUAD

Self-explanatory. With THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS and A MONSTER CALLS, I was expecting to get emotional 24/7 in the theater, but it didn't happen and I was pissed. For the other four films listed, I just was too disappointed with the story and lack of character development/connection. Ugh.

Thanks for joining me for part 1 of the MARZON-YEAH! Awards! I'll be back next week with answers to more unique categories, such as:
